PCMS continues to spread its international wings with a joint project in Germany between the PCMS and Karstadt. The Karstadt initiative started in January of 2003 to tackle the challenge of delivering point-of-sale capabilities to the largest department store in Europe with over 8000 tills in operation. The key business benefits of redefining business processes for higher efficiency was to simplify support of new business areas, reducing cashier effort, while delivering a higher cost benefit by using recognized industry standards and faster production of new requirements. The technical drivers were the use of thin client and resilient server technology coupled by a significant decision to implement IBM's new Retail Environment for SuSE Linux or IRES Technology drove this solution. As part of this implementation, Karstadt will have an extremely strong IT foundation from which to operate and has achieved what most people said was not possible in just over twelve months. In the end, Karstadt received a working tool to maximize speed and strength of response to the ever-changing needs of the retail market.
