As reported by Planet Retail, Walgreens renews POS systems with PCMS software

5 Mar 2010

Walgreens is one of the first major US retailers to replace its time-honored IBM checkout applications 4690 with a modern solution. As Planet Retail learned from consultants involved in the project, Walgreen is testing the Java-based software from British specialist PCMS. The system has been piloted in three stores and will now be rolled out to a total of 200 stores for the next stage of testing.

Additionally, Walgreens is in negotiations with the major POS system providers such as IBM and NCR on new hardware with touchscreen display. The open source code policy of PCMS enables Walgreens to customize and support the system in-house. PCMS is also currently being rolled out by Marks & Spencer in the UK on IBM hardware. In the US, most of the major grocery retailers still rely on IBM's General Sales Application (GSA) 4690.
